Our Prediction
Race for 1st place
Portugal under Roberto Martínez are the firm favourites to top Group K, likely featuring Cristiano Ronaldo's swansong tournament. Beyond the captain, Portugal's depth — Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, Bruno Fernandes, Rafael Leão, Vitinha, João Neves — is the deepest in the group by a clear margin. Portugal should beat Uzbekistan and DR Congo comfortably; the decider for first is matchday 2 against Colombia — a tense, high-quality fixture that could go either way.
Race for 2nd place
Colombia are the firmest pick for second place, with the talent to push Portugal for first. Néstor Lorenzo's side around James Rodríguez (still influential), Luis Díaz, Jhon Durán and Daniel Muñoz finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying behind Argentina, and the team has firepower. Six points from DR Congo and Uzbekistan plus even a draw against Portugal locks down second; an outright Portugal win could see Colombia top the group.
Third-place playoff slot
DR Congo are the firmest pick for the third-place playoff slot — the dark horse of the group. Sébastien Desabre has rebuilt the Leopards into a physical, well-organised side with Cédric Bakambu, Yoane Wissa and Chancel Mbemba. The path: defeats to Portugal and Colombia, a clear win over Uzbekistan — three points should be enough for one of the eight best-thirds places.
Bottom of the group
Uzbekistan are the most likely group bottom in their first-ever World Cup. Fabio Cannavaro has built a credible side around Eldor Shomurodov and a young domestic-league core, but the talent gap to Portugal and Colombia is enormous. The realistic target is a competitive performance against DR Congo on matchday 3 — three losses is the most probable outcome, though a single point would be a historic achievement.
