Our Prediction

Pre-Tournament Forecast

Race for 1st place

Reigning champions Argentina are heavy favourites to top Group J. Lionel Scaloni's system around Lionel Messi (likely his final World Cup), Julián Álvarez, Alexis Mac Allister and Enzo Fernández remains the most decorated and battle-tested in the tournament. Argentina should win all three group games comfortably; their only test is matchday 2 against Austria, where Rangnick's pressing could cause early chaos — but Argentina's experience should ultimately prevail.

Race for 2nd place

Austria are the firmest pick for second place. Ralf Rangnick has built one of the most tactically distinctive sides in Europe, with David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer and Marko Arnautović forming a complete spine. Austria should beat Jordan and Algeria, leaving the Argentina fixture as the only difficult one. Six points ensures second comfortably; even five points would likely do.

Third-place playoff slot

Algeria are the favourites for the third-place playoff slot. Vladimir Petković has restored the Desert Foxes after their 2022 qualification disaster, and Riyad Mahrez, Ismaël Bennacer and Houssem Aouar provide European-honed quality. The path: a defeat to Argentina, a tight loss or draw to Austria, and a win over Jordan — 3 or 4 points should secure a best-third spot.

Bottom of the group

Jordan are the most likely group bottom — but their first-ever World Cup appearance is a historic moment. Jamal Sellami's squad, built largely on domestic and Saudi Arabia-based players, will be physically competitive but outclassed at this level. A single point in any fixture would be a major achievement; three losses is the realistic outcome.

Updated After Matchday 1

Group J unfolded exactly to script: Argentina handled Algeria comfortably and Austria gave Jordan no chance. Argentina, with Messi as ringleader and Álvarez at the tip, looked fresh and dangerous — the reigning champions are taking control of the tournament. Austria, disciplined under Rangnick and clinical through Sabitzer, also booked themselves as first-place contenders. Algeria and Jordan now urgently need points in their head-to-head — otherwise both will be heading home early. The decider is Argentina–Austria on 22 June: it will decide first place and is likely to be a tense, tactically tight affair.

Updated After Matchday 2

Argentina rolled on: a 2–0 win over Austria — with Messi reportedly moving past Klose as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer — made it two from two and secured top spot in Group J. The reigning champions look ominously in control. The race for second is wide open: Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2–1 and pull level with Austria on three points, setting up a decisive Algeria–Austria clash on 27 June where the winner goes through and a draw could suit Austria on goal difference. Jordan, beaten twice, are out and face a dead rubber against Argentina. Austria's clinical edge through Sabitzer makes them slight favourites, but Algeria's resilience makes it a coin-flip. The likeliest finish: Argentina top the group, with Austria edging Algeria for the runner-up berth.
